When for a feeder? What factors to take into account?
Spring is a long-awaited period for many anglers. With the beginning of March, a large part of the fishing grounds are no longer covered with ice, although the water is still quite cold. After winter, fish can be sluggish and cautious in their behavior. Only with time, as the water becomes warmer, will they move to shallower areas of the fishery. Nonetheless, feeder works exceptionally well during spring days, as it allows you to easily adapt to changing weather conditions.
The main advantages of this method are:
-
it is simple and intuitive,
-
allows you to reach the fish faster,
-
shows high resistance to wind,
-
allows for gentle fishing,
-
allows precise and effective baiting,
-
shows delicate bites well.
Feeder and spring - what results can be counted on?
With the arrival of warm days and nights, fish increase their feeding activity. You can have a good bite not only on sunny days, but also when a cool day was preceded by a warm night.
However, sometimes in spring it is difficult to find a place where fish bite well. Then it is worth betting on mobility and active search for new positions. You can make this task easier for yourself if you pack well and don't take accessories that are of little use and take up a lot of space.
The weather in spring can be capricious. In early spring, anglers look for fish mainly in the deeper parts of the water, and only later, when it gets warmer, they look out for shallower regions, where the water warms up much faster.
During this period, fishing with a feeder, you have a good chance of catching roach, bream, spearing, chub, ide and bream.
Feeder in spring - choose tactics and equipment
Feeder fishing in the spring requires, first of all, good preparation. It is not a matter of spending long hours on the water and waiting for a bite. On the contrary, it's a good idea to keep a close eye on the surface of the water and change your hunting position when your baiting doesn't yield results. This is the period when you can comfortably experiment with different equipment.
Some people switch from feeders to pickers in the spring. These are rods designed to catch fish in still waters using baskets without weight or light springs. Pickers are also sometimes called a shorter version of a feeder. With their help you can catch smaller species of fish.
A picker will be a good choice for early spring, but still it is not worth completely abandoning the classicfeeder rod. During this period, you can opt for a 3.60 m long rod with a casting weight of about 60-80 g and a soft tip, which is great for fishing in still water. The soft tip is very sensitive, so it signals well even very subtle bites, plus it minimizes the resistance felt by the fish during the strike.
In the spring, it is worth choosing smaller feeders with a weight of 15-20 g. Basket feeders are mounted on a twist. This is a leader connected by a few or several centimeters of main line. The twist reduces the risk of entanglement and stiffens the whole set. For your set, you can choose a leader of more than 50 cm with 0.10-0.12 mm monofilament, and a small hook.
So how to fish with a feeder in the spring? Gently and sensitively! Such tactics work best on spring days.
Bait for spring feeder
When preparing for spring fishing, you can not forget to prepare the right bait for feeder. Although every fishery is different, and every angler has his own habits, there are a few universal rules to follow during the spring period. In the spring period, we recommend choosing bait:
-
low-calorie,
-
with a delicate aroma,
-
smaller quantities, while maintaining better quality,
-
with a sticky consistency, so that it will not fall from the basket right after casting.
At the beginning of the season, a dark roach bait based on roasted hemp, a combination of ochotta and hemp scent, crushed pellets, corn, or bait in the form of white worms, pinks and ochotta will work well.
-
Caution: in early spring you should not overdo the amount of bait, because the fish are still quite sluggish, which can cause them to quickly eat and leave the fishery.
Feeder and spring are a hoot!
Anglers often treat the pre-spring as a warm-up before the rest of the season. This is a good time to do a review of fishing equipment after the winter and refresh the sets they have. The behavior of fish in spring can be difficult to predict, especially if the weather outside is extremely changeable and capricious. Therefore, it is a straightforward dream opportunity to experiment and test your skills in practice.
The key to success will be correct assessment of the fishery and gentle fishing. Fish in the spring are cautious. However, with each passing day their appetite will increase. That's why it's a good idea to take two rods with you to the fishery. One armed typically for spring, and the other designed for catching larger fish. In this way you will significantly increase your chances of success.
