Bleak hunting – a guide for feeder anglers

Bleaks are small, silvery fish that often congregate in large schools. Hunting for them can be very rewarding. In this guide, we will introduce you to all the necessary aspects of fishing for bleaks with a feeder.

Bleaks – what should you know?

Bleaks are small, predatory fish that inhabit almost all types of fresh waters in Poland. They prefer waters with a fast current and a clear bottom, but they can also be found in ponds, lakes and canals. They are very mobile and active for most of the day, making them an ideal target for feeder anglers.

A characteristic feature of this species is the silvery scale, which shimmers in the sun's rays. These reflectors are helpful in locating schools of these fish. Bleaks feed mainly on plankton, small insects and their larvae. Take this into account when choosing a lure. The small size and fast movements make fishing for this fish a bit of a challenge.

Choosing the right feeder bleaks fishing

A bleak-fishing set should allow you to precisely feed the lure and feel the most delicate bites. Below you will find a description of the most important elements of a feeder set.

Choosing a bleaking rod

A bleak-fishing rod should be light and sensitive to allow you to feel even the softest bites. The best choice will be rods with a length of 3 to 3.6 meters, with a casting weight of up to 40 grams. An example of such a rod is the Mikado KATSUDO XTS FEEDER 280 c.w. up to 25 g. It is an extremely light and sophisticated rod, made of sensitive and flexible carbon fiber.

Bleak reel – which one to choose?

A bleak-fishing reel should be light and precise. Choose a model with a smooth drag and high-quality bearings that will allow you to reel in the line smoothly. Reels with a size of 2000-4000 will be your ideal choice.

Our store offers a wide selection of reels that are perfect for bleaks. These include the Daiwa 20 Fuego LT 4000-C reel, an innovative model that impresses with its low weight – only 235 grams! The high-quality drag system ensures lightning-fast and reliable operation and optimum stopping power.

Choose the right line

The line for bleakfishing should be thin and strong. Monofilament lines with a diameter of 0.12-0.16 mm will work best, providing adequate strength and allowing for long casts. Look out for lines with low stretch that allow for a better bite feel, such as the GÓREK Competition Premium 150m 0.14mmline. It is a medium stretch monofilament line that is ideal for everyday fishing in a wide variety of waters.

Bleak hooks

Small and sharp hooks are the basis for bleakfishing. The best choice will be hooks in size 16-20, allowing you to hook up securely and keep the fish on the rod. Choose hooks made of high-quality, corrosion-resistant steel. The Kamasan B560 Wide Gape Barbed 16 hooks will definitely work well when hunting this species of fish. They are distinguished by their popular shape, which holds well in the mouth after hooking the fish.

Baiting bleaks – how to attract fish to the fishery?

Baiting is the basis of success in bleakfish hunting. Start by preparing a groundbait that will attract fish to your fishery. It should be fine-grained and flavorful to attract fish from a long distance. Bleaks are not demanding fish, but according to experienced anglers, they are tempted by groundbaits with sweet aromas, such as gingerbread, almond or strawberry. You can try Germina Gingerbread 1 kg, a universal mixture for fishing in all types of waters.

It is a good idea to add small particles to the groundbait, such as semolina, oatmeal, coconut flakes or finely ground corn. This will make the groundbait more attractive to the fish and keep them in the fishery longer. Remember to regularly refill the groundbait in the fishery, throwing small portions of it into the water every few minutes.

Use the spot baiting technique. Throw the groundbait into one selected place. Fish will gather there, which increases your chances of catching more bleak.

Which bleak-based lures will work best?

Choosing the right lure is another important part of successful bleakfishing. Bleaks prefer small, natural baits, such as worms, insect larvae, as well as small pieces of fish or shrimp. Anglers dealing with bleak, when asked to indicate the most effective lure, often point to a pin. It is a small worm, ideal for catching small fish. When fishing, you can also have a traditional white worm on hand, also quite effective when it comes to bleaks. You can experiment with different colors and aromas of lures to find the ones that best attract bleaks.

The technique of feeding the bait also matters. Bleaks are very mobile, so use the technique of active lure retrieval, which consists in gently moving and jerking it. This will make the lure more attractive to the fish and increase your chances of a successful bite.
