Why feeder is a good choice for the lake

When you go fishing on a lake, you probably set your sights on medium-sized roach, bream, tench, carp or amur. Feeder is perfect for hunting these species, and for several reasons:

  • With frequent baiting, the feeder keeps the fish in the fishery.

  • Feeder allows you to easily control the set. Since it is not very heavy, casting is not too complicated. The feeder can be accurately cast to the same spot.

  • Thanks to the delicacy of the set, it clearly signals bites, which allows you to feel the moment of the strike well.

  • The relatively stiff rod makes it easy to tow.

  • To start feeder fishing, you do not need to invest a lot of money.

What does a feeder set for a lake consist of?

A feeder set for the lake consists of several basic elements - rod, reel, bait basket and weights. Among other things, the simplicity of this fishing method is the reason for its great popularity.

Choose one that is powerful enough. Usually it' s good to have about 200m spare on the spool. For the lake, we recommend one of three types of reels:

  • Afree-running reel. It allows you to freely release the line without opening the bail. It will be especially useful when fishing for large fish. Worth trying, for example, is the Mikado Keino Method Feeder 3006 Fd reel.

  • Reel with a front brake located on top of the spool. It is usually smaller and lighter, but at the same time it is durable and works well in various conditions. In our store you will find such reels. An example is the Cormoran Veycor Feeder 5pif 5000.

  • It is areel with a rear brake located in the back of the housing. It has a larger size, but allows for quick spool changes. See, for example, the Robinson Method Feeder FD 305 reel.

As for the question of whether to choose a front or rear brake, this is an individual decision. In fact, the most important thing here is your comfort and habits.

Another advantage of feeder fishing is that, thanks to the bait basket, baiting is done with every cast. The basket is designed so that the groundbait forms a so-called "carpet of groundbait" during the release.

Choose the right bait basket for the fishery and the distance at which you will be fishing. In general, the deeper the reservoir and the farther you want to cast, the heavier the basket should be. This will ensure that the bait will reach the spot you want.

What if you do not have the results of feeder fishing on the river?

Sometimes you may find that you are not catching many fish. Perhaps the reason is simply poor stocking of the fishery, but also consider whether you are making mistakes that reduce the chances of success. What might these mistakes be?

  • You arejamming too early. Are you getting bites, but no fish? You are probably jamming too early. What you take for a bite is just fish rubbing against the line. Signaling a proper bite is a jerk and a strong bending of the rod tip.

  • You are fishing passively. Do you cast often? Feeder fishing is fishing actively and introducing new bait regularly. Start with 4 to 6 baskets to begin with. It is assumed that on warm days you should provide a new portion of food every 10-15 minutes, but beware: in winter, too much bait in one place can scare away or overfeed the fish.

  • Fishing too deep. A mesh bait basket is usually not effective at depths above 2 meters. If you want to fish that deep, you can add extra weight to it, wet the groundbait more firmly, or glue it with groundbait glue, such as MatchPRO Bentonite glue.

  • You are casting to different places. Are you casting to the exact same spot? It turns out that it is the precision that is basically the basis of success. Use the clip on the reel with sensitivity and practice a lot!

  • You have the wrong bait. Remember that at different times of the year, fish prefer different foods. In the winter, animal baits are effective, and in the summer - plant baits. However, don't limit yourself to one option! Have different types of lures with you and just try them out to see what works best on a given day and in a given place.
