Is method feeder suitable for a river?
Many anglers have found that method feeder can be used without any worries when fishing in a river. If you properly weight the basket, you will be able to fish even at higher tides. And at the same time you don't have to cast far at all - precision is much more important.
Method feeder works best in ground and slow-moving rivers, as well as in canals and oxbow lakes. Try it also in lowland rivers, which are sometimes extensive. The effects may positively surprise you!
Feeder or spinning - which will be better in a river?
The first association with fishing in a river is spinning. Perhaps this is due, among other things, to the low level of difficulty of spinning and the small amount of equipment needed. However, in recent years feeder fishing in rivers has been growing in popularity.
It is impossible to say unequivocally which is better. It depends on your personal preferences and expectations.
-
Spinning is fishing for people who want to fish very actively. It will work well in a river with a fast current.
-
Feeder allows you to sit quietly on the river bank. You can use a sturdy ground rod to haul back big fish more easily.
Start by studying the bottom of the fishery
When fishing with a feeder in a river, remember to initially study the bottom of the fishery.
-
Put an olive-shaped weight (such as Flagman Mace Marker Lead) on your rod. Choose the weight according to the depth and current of the river. The bigger they are, the heavier the weight should be.
-
Throw the weight around the location of your siting. Throw it at an interval of a few meters closer and further away, left and right.
-
When the weight sinks to the bottom, pull it up to you. This will show you whether there are any obstacles on the bottom.
How to set up a feeder in a river step by step
To have good results when feeder fishing in a river, find the trough where there are the most fish. This will also be the deepest place in the river. You will locate the trough by casting the sinker several times:
-
Each throw should be about a meter away.
-
When the sinker hits the water, hold the line so it doesn't slip out of the reel.
-
Count the seconds until the set completely sinks to the bottom.
Of course, you are interested in the spot where you count the longest. When you find the trough, cast into it again and when the set sinks to the bottom, put the line on the reel clip. This will ensure that you reach the same spot every time you cast again.
What kind of basket to choose?
The basket is selected according to the specifics of the fishery. If there is a strong current on the river, choose a square or triangular shape. Baskets of this shape hold the bottom better.
Feeder on a small river with a smaller current can be equipped with a round basket. They are often extended with special "brakes". Try closed baskets, from which worms slowly escape, i.e. Maggot baskets.
Basket load
It's important to find the optimal weight of the basket. It needs to be as light as possible so as not to spook the fish, but also enough to keep the basket in place.
How to find out what the optimal load is? Again, cast the basket several times with an increasing load. Repeat the action until you find that it stands still on the bottom. This way, when the fish takes, the basket will move gently and you will see it on the tip.
How big a leader to choose on the river?
Leaders put on feeders for the river are quite long. It can be assumed that the universal length is 90-95 cm. Such a leader works well in most troughs, at medium depths, and with an even current. In addition, it will be suitable for virtually all species of fish.
-
In very deep fisheries or where the water flows slowly, you can try a leader of about 70 cm.
-
If you notice that the fish are not feeding and you do not have any bites, it may be worth checking a leader of 120 cm.
And what to say about short leaders, for example, those 50 cm long? You can use them:
-
Where there is no current, for example, where the river has flooded.
-
In fisheries where the leader could tangle with the set,
-
When you detect a great number of snags on the bottom, i.e. on rivers with a backwater current, with the phenomenon of water eddies or with a very overgrown bottom.
Feeder rods for river fishing
A sufficiently powerful rod is necessary for fishing in the river. We recommend typical, fairly versatile carp rods. As for the casting weight, it should be quite large. On most rivers, c.w. in the range of 110-140 gr will work.
What length rod to choose? Take with you a rod with a length of 3.6-3.9 m. This will allow you to fish at longer distances. In addition, you will be able to put such a rod almost vertically. Thus, the current of the river will not push and push the rod too much. For the river we recommend m.in. rod Daiwa Aqualite Feeder 3,60m 120g.
-
Advice. The rod should be matched with a suitable tip. The stronger the current, the stiffer the tip should be.
Successful techniques for river fishing - for beginners and experienced ones
#1 Pre-baiting
It is a good idea to start with pre-baiting. Cast a basket filled with groundbait. When it sinks to the bottom, wait about half a minute. Then vigorously lift the basket up 3 times. This will ensure that all the groundbait will spill out at the chosen spot. Repeat this a dozen times.
#2 Content bait
Use a content bait. The richer the mixture, the better. After all, the point is not only to make the fish come, but also - to make them stay in the place you have chosen. Therefore, do not begrudge the bait. It may make your spot interesting for individuals usually feeding a little further away.
-
Tip. When the water temperature drops, add clay to your bait. Such a mixture spreads better on the bottom.
Summary
Feeder fishing in a river is a little more complicated than in standard, predictable fisheries. It requires more work and preparation. However, the specimens you catch will certainly reward you for your efforts. Try the high-quality equipment available in our store and get on the water!
